Next Album Project

So now that my Songs From The Wood album is finally complete, I'm contemplating which album to start working on next. It's currently a toss up between Christian Folks and Melting Pot. There are a lot of songs on the first that I've been itching to record, however I've already gotten a start on the second.

Christian Folks will have my folksy songs with a Christian theme. Most of these would not be considered worship songs, Although you never know!

Melting Pot is a place where I have gathered the songs that blend different style of music, or are of a music style that is outside of my normal genre. This will be a challenge to push myself beyond my comfort zone. And also several of the songs on this album are little more than a rough idea that will need to be crafted and completed before any of the recording begins. This could slow me down, but what's the hurry anyway?

Maybe I'll just work on both of them at the same time... YEAH, that's it! Here we go...

My Life My Lord My God

(Listen to the song; #8 on SONGS FROM THE WOOD)

Okay, I posted the finished product of My Life My Lord My God. If you wanna listen, Click the link above to go to the
Album page Songs From The Wood and choose #8.
Honestly, I could barely remember this song. Luckily I kept my notes and songs fairly organized and ran across it when I was compiling my total song list. Reading through the lyrics, I liked the concept- it is basically saying that God is everything to me- my Lord, my God, my Savior, and my very life. I am also glad that I wrote the chord structure I had in mind so that I can very closely approximate the original sound idea as I finish this one up.

As I’ve had more and more recording tools opening up to me, completing old songs has become increasingly easy for me. Part of that, I think, is that the more stuff I complete  and get recorded, the more room I open up in my creative bank account. It feels like I was a computer disk drive that was too full and now I’m freeing up disk space for more and newer songs to take form. Time will tell if this is in fact the case. During the time I wrote this song, I had simplified my lifestyle to the point that I rarely ever drove my car. I rode my bicycle to work from East San Diego (45th and Whiteman) to Downtown San Diego (5th and Broadway), about twelve miles each way along with my friend Wayne Lamb. So I was getting in good physical shape and I felt great. On the weekends, my cousin and roommate Gerard Michaud and I played racquetball quite often- usually at San Diego City College where we could get an indoor court for free. That’s all I got for this one. Here are the lyrics:

MY LIFE MY LORD MY GOD
© 1985 Words & Music by Reginald M. Michaud

Oh Lord I trust in You with all my aching heart
I cannot lean upon my wisdom just to start
Lord let your handiwork be seen in all I do
So that my way of life will always point to You

My life, my Lord, my God, my Savior and my King
With You here by my side, I will face anything

Make straight my paths oh Lord, deliver me I pray
And in Your precious loving arms forever I will stay

I shall not count myself as wise in my own eyes
But I shall fear the Lord and shun the devil's lies
Oh Lord bring health to me and nourish all my bones
And I shall honor You at work and in my home

My life, my Lord, my God, my Savior and my King
With You here by my side, I will face anything

Make straight my paths oh Lord, deliver me I pray
And in Your precious loving arms forever I will stay

To You I lift my voice, to Thee I sing my praise

Oh Lord the peace You bring while in these latter days
I once was dead to You, and now I hear Your voice
To give my life to Thee, a simple precious choice

My life, my Lord, my God, my Savior and my King
With You here by my side, I will face anything

Make straight my paths oh Lord, deliver me I pray
And in Your precious loving arms forever I will stay
Forever I will stay - Forever I will stay

Working on a New Song

Well it's been a pretty slow week in the old recording studio. But I managed to plod along on this new song I'm working on. The idea came to me in 1985 which was a fairly prolific year for worship songs. This one never made it past a hook line and a couple of follow on lines... that is up until now. The song is MY LIFE MY LORD MY GOD; probably not exactly a blockbuster of a title, but it reflected the deep connection with Jesus I was feeling in worship at the time. The ideas for the new lyrics come from Proverbs 3:5-6 which says "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight."  I continue to strive for this in my life; to trust Him with all my heart, to lean on His wisdom found in the bible, and to glorify Him in all my ways. It's a life long goal for me that never gets easier!

The song reminds me a little bit of a Johnny Cash song; I can just imagine hearing his voice singing it. Kind of like one of his more obscure gospel tunes. So far I've got two fingerpicking acoustic guitars and a claw hammer style banjo part along with some organ with heavenly voices mixed in and a straight forward rock beat. This is the fun part of song arranging to me; when I don't know what exactly I'm going after with a song sound and just let it take on a life of its own. I listen over and over and try to imagine what instrument will compliment what I'm hearing. Sometimes I actually fall asleep listening! Oh well; it beats watching reruns of some cheesy sitcom right? Until next time... happy song writing!!!
