SON OF GOD

Listen to the song; #3 on TO SEE THE CHILD
1986
I was playing HELPLESSLY HOPING by Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and there was this riff at the end of the chorus that was very catchy. It was a two note hammer-on chord riff and I started fooling around with variations of playing it when I added a pull-off after the hammer-on and thought it sounded really nice. So I built around that and made that riff a very prominent feature of SON OF GOD. I was picking an arpeggio in G with the riff thrown into the middle and it sounded mellow and intimate so I was shooting for some worship lyrics that fit into the mood. I think the words that flowed out of that work nicely- and I love singing it to this day. It is directed to Jesus and makes me feel so close to Him while acknowledging His position and power.

It’s an awesome feeling that we can bless Him with our worship, knowing that He is fully God and fully man too. I think that the writing and singing style of Renee Garner influenced this one somewhat. Shortly after this song was written, we moved into a three bedroom house in Lemon Grove. It was quite a step up for us, although the home was owned by my wife’s parents and the previous tenants had really let it go. So we moved in with the understanding that we would do all we could to renovate and fix it up and they gave us a great deal on the rent; $500.00 per month. We also had a good sized garage, a first for us, and there I setup my four-track Tascam recorder and a makeshift studio. Mostly during that time I worked on recording a project for Cerro Azul in Mexico called Soldados de la Luz (Soldiers of the Light). I had been involved in teaching worship songs down there which also involved working with a translator who helped me to translate the words into Spanish. So at that time I never got around to recording my own songs, but I finally did finish a cassette and gave copies to Rick Johnson for distribution down there in that little squatter village.

SON OF GOD
Words and music by Reggie Michaud © 1986

Son of God I sing only for You
I need Your Spirit to pull me through
Leave behind all of my troubles and cares
And take a step on Your heavenly stairs

Lord I break right down and I worship You
Son of God and Son of man
There is no power that is over You
You’re seated at the Father’s right hand

Jesus Christ I sing only for You
To praise Your name in spirit and truth
Intercede for this carnal heart
For no one else can fulfill Your part

Lord I break right down and I worship You
Son of God and son of man
There is no power that is over You
You’re seated at the Father’s right hand
